Anderson Knee and Shoulder Center

Robert J. Purchase, M.D.

Robert J. Purchase, M.D. Dr. Robert Purchase was born in Western Pennsylvania and remained there to attend Washington and Jefferson College. It was during this time, as a collegiate football player and biology major, that he became interested in orthopedic surgery. He attended Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA and stayed at Temple to complete his orthopedic residency. Temple’s orthopedic program provided a great mix of clinical and academic experiences and has a history of producing the top orthopedic surgeons. He supplemented his orthopedic residency with a sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship in San Francisco. After completing his fellowship with San Francisco’s best shoulder and sports medicine doctors, he practiced in a general orthopedic group with a focus on shoulder and sports medicine in California’s Central Valley.

As a fully trained shoulder surgeon, Dr. Purchase specializes in advanced arthroscopic techniques primarily and open reconstructive techniques, if necessary, from hemi-resurfacing procedures to revision shoulder replacements. He is equally skilled at arthroscopic knee surgeries, such as treating meniscus, cartilage, and ligament injuries. Additionally, he puts an equal amount of time and effort into refining his general orthopedic skills. He routinely performs partial and total knee replacements, total hip replacements, and treatment of all manner of traumatic injuries.

Dr. Purchase’s philosophy of care is anchored in his belief that a well-informed patient is the best patient, and his bedside manner has been shaped by his own family’s experiences with the health care system. His primary role is to serve as an advisor to his patients. This allows the patient to be an active participant in their care. To facilitate this process, Dr. Purchase explores unique techniques to continue the informative process of the office visit by using email, participating in social media, and creating original internet content.

Dr. Purchase’s wife is a breast cancer survivor, and his daughter is a brain cancer survivor so maximizing health is of the utmost importance. If there are no youth sporting events to attend, Dr. Purchase and his family can usually be found hiking the trails of Marin. Drawing on his athletic youth, he continues to remain fit with a regular and varied routine of yoga, running, swimming, biking, etc. All this activity requires appropriate nutrition, and Dr. Purchase loves to find ways to maximize the taste of minimally healthy weekend dinners.
